Open Office – The giant turd of the software world
I have been using open office for months and months much to my dissatisfaction and at this very moment at 3am in the morning after using it for hours with the hope of being productive I am absolutely livid with it. It is by far the most frustrating piece of software I have ever used on a computer and I am now going to take my time and abuse the crap out of it.
Before I do so, let’s be fair and list some of the good things that open office has to offer so people don’t crucify me for hating an open source software:
- It exports PDFs nicely
Ok so….
There is a software called Microsoft Office. It is essentially the biggest competitor for open office. Lucky for open office this thing is 500x more popular than it will ever be and so not many people have to deal with the rubbish of open office (I hate you so much). I want to concentrate on Writer Vs MS Word. Let’s compare the two shall we?
| Features | OO Writer | MS Word |
|---|---|---|
| crashes unexpectedly during far from intense use | Y | N |
| automatic disabling of spell check | Y | N |
| Ugly fonts which burn the retina | Y | N |
| Useless updates | Y | N |
| Hangs while working | Y | N |
| Intuitive | N | Y |

My favourite feature of Open Office writer is its ability to hang between the scrolling of new pages. It humorously makes me want to kill myself:

Open Office at its best (go die in a fire)
I have to breathe and take a moment to be serious. One great thing about open source software is its strong support from the community for issues. I decided to test out some community support:

My forum post to OO support
I am anxiously waiting to see some feedback.

I notice Alzheimer’s in your list of things better than OO writer. In this case I think Alzheimer’s could be an effective solution for your problem.
Interesting thoughts on OO. I personally haven’t had a single issue with it. It scrolls between pages perfectly, is infact more stable than MS Word, has never hung on me and the fonts a great. I admit it isn’t the most intuative piece of software but it works a damn sight better than MS Word thats for sure.
I would say its something wrong with your setup. What OS are you running it on?
I run it on Ubuntu with compiz enabled and its perfect, the best part is that it uses open standards, unlike MS Word which claims to use ‘open standards’ but in fact cripples them so much they result in creating a new standard which on-one else can understand. Word = POS.
Note that this was written out of pure frustration and I don’t hate it as much now (although the same aforementioned problems are still problems).
I see that you use Ubuntu and while I love this OS I am going to assume that you are very much an open source fan boy who will support anything which rivals the MS monopoly (much like apple fan boys who avidly support apple products).
I have actually found a way of stopping the pause between pages by changing the view to web layout but as for the setup I use… I use multiple setups.
I have used it at work on an average dell celeron, 1GB RAM, integrated graphics on XP
On the home desktop – a Q6600, 4GB RAM, 8800GT on XP,
A laptop – T9300, 2GB RAM, 8400M GS on Vista
All posing the same issues. While I’m a big fan of open source and a neutral observer of MS products, I have to disagree due to my experiences with it and say MS Word is far superior.
hehe, I admit I’m a huge linux user, but I acknowledge how and when MS is superior, it just doesn’t happen that often. Perhaps OO on windows isn’t as well coded as linux? Thats all really. I must admit I would probably use MS Office if I had a windows machine, but I don’t so I use OO and it suits me fine.
